About the Acceptance of International Students

Utsunomiya University has actively promoted the acceptance of international students from abroad. The Faculty of International Studies has hosted the highest number of international students.

A number of international students from different regions of the world are studying a variety of disciplines together with Japanese students at Utsunomiya University. Utsunomiya University international students include four-year undergraduate students; exchange students from universities in China, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Korea, and Germany, among others, under student exchange agreements with Utsunomiya University; exchange students under the Japanese language and culture training program sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; and exchange students under short-term student exchange programs.

Over the years, many international students have graduated or completed courses at the Faculty of International Studies.

Support Services for International Students

  • Student Tutor Program
  • The Student Tutor Program will assign a Japanese student as a tutor to assist each international student at Utsunomiya University. A junior or senior student from the Faculty of International Studies or a graduate student from the Graduate School of International Studies will be assigned as a student tutor to each international student for the first one or two years, depending on the length of study at the University. The tutor will assist the student in adjusting to daily and campus life soon after arriving in Japan, in the mastery of the coursework, and in learning Japanese. International students are expected to deepen international exchange and cross-cultural understanding through interactions with their student tutors.
  • Provide help with scholarship programs
  • Undertake a joint guarantee for the apartment rental agreement (To qualify for this program, international students must take out comprehensive renters insurance for foreign students studying in Japan).
  • Issue Fukushinsho (Permission to Engage in Remunerative Activities).
  • Issue certificates (primarily scholarship certificate).
  • Organize and implement a variety of campus activities and events.

The International Student Center provides guidance and advice to international students from overseas as well as to Japanese students who wish to study abroad.
