Critical Thinking Toward Global Competence

In this group session we will think through ways to support global competency by using a step-by-step process to understand what isimportant（critical）regarding ourselves as well as our working relations with others. This workshop is an effort to better equip participants to more fully understand how to use critical thinking to support globalcompetence in careers both domestic and overseas.

My career path has been varied to say the least and not without defeats. Very early in mycareer I understood that my best life lay in education andacademia, but as I felt my family were unsupportive of that endeavour I turned to business - taking positions in real estate and head-hunting after havingexplored careers in law, government, retail, journalism,non-profit and the arts - before eventually finishing degrees in both Japanese and English literature.

Through this workshop, the participants will seek keycompetencies and critical skills f or practitioners in internationaldevelopment fields such as International NGOs, UNs, donor agencies andprivate sectors. We will also exercise gap-analysis to draw the path forparticipants to identify their future learning areas on and off campus.

Kurihara Shunsuke earned a Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Managementfrom the School for International Training, USA, and a PhD in International Developmentfrom Yokohama National University. His professional career in the internationaldevelopment field includes; Regional Planning & Program Development Advisor（2012 -2014）and Rehabilitation & Development Advisor（2009 - 2011）in Sri Lanka, under theJICA Expert Scheme, and Project Director（2003 - 2008）, Program Officer（2001 - 2008）in Sri Lanka and Project Coordinator（2000 - 2001）in East Timor, CARE International.

Social research is my passion. I worked as a researcher at the Social Research Center and theInstitute of Social Research and Development, University of St. La Salle, Bacolod, Philippines in1985-1987. I received a Master’s degree in Sociology at the Ateneo de Manila University in 1995with a full scholarship grant from Winrock International Institute and the Asian Development Bank.In 2011, I was awarded a D octorate degree in International Development Studies at NagoyaUniversity. C urrently, I am an educator in Aichi University and in Nagoya Gakuin University.Experience has taught me that students are the best teachers in improving classroom interactionsleading to a productive learning process. I hope that we can be mutually enriched in this seminar.

With the help of English-speaking guests from overseas this workshop provides an opportunity to practice profilingcharacteristics of strangers and interacting and building socialrelationships with them. Participants are expected to be active and workcooperatively in a limited time.

Kazuhiko YOSHIDA, descendant of Emishi and Japanese from Rikuzen-Takata, is a linguist and Japanese language instructor. After studying in Montpellier, France and joining in the teaching practice program by Nihongo Kyooiku Gakkai, he was sent by Japan Foundation as a visiting lecturer to Pakistan and Thailand. He has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and has been teaching classes of multilingual communication at Utsunomiya University since 2003, where students of different backgrounds work together.

The character of a leader is very important in community development, a community leader should be someone who is humble, action oriented, a good mobilizer and whose community understands and respects him／her. A community leader should be a person who has the spirit of a servant leader.

Bernard Timothy Appau is from Ghana. He has studied agriculture in the Philippines,and Asian Rural Institute（ARI）in Tochigi, Japan. He teaches and practices organic agriculture and community development in the Institute to train leaders from different countries. H e has also worked for development projects including food aid to refugees from Ivory Coast in Ghana and distributed free treated mosquito nets to pregnant women and children under 5 years old as part of his involvement in the Christian Ministry.

講師：Linda Ohama　リンダ　オオハマ 氏 （日系三世の映画監督、作家、ヴィジュアル・アーティスト）

As a Canadian of Japanese ancestry living in a multi-cultural society, I have often explored the questions, 'What makes us different?' and 'What makes us the same?' Learning to celebrate, express and accept our differences is one of the important criteria for the success of multi-culturalism in Canada and in finding peace in the world we share. This is even of great importance in the recovery of a place like Tohoku. Using creative interaction and expressions using recordings, video, writing and personal experiences, we will explore individual differences and similarities that enhance each of us as human beings as we get to know each other.

Nikkei Canadian sansei Linda Ohama has been working in film for over 20 years. Her documentaries have been screened in the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia and received numerous awards. Actively involved in cultural, youth and professional art communities, regionally, nationally and internationally, she gives regular lectures at various universities in Japan. She is currently producing/directing the feature documentary "Tohoku no Shingetsu", a first hand story from a Canadian POV of communities and people in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima from 2011 to 2014.
